Staco Systems has been awarded a US patent for Transistorized, Voltage-Controlled Dimming Circuit

Costa Mesa, CA – February 19, 2009
US Patent 7,462,995 was awarded December 9, 2008 to StacoSwitch, Inc DBA Staco Systems. This invention pertains generally to lighting systems. More particularly, this invention relates to a voltage-controlled dimming circuit that is configured to retrofit an aircraft cockpit incandescent lighting system in a plug-and-play manner.

The patent abstract reads “The patent covers a switching transistor that provides a current source to a load when activated by an input voltage and at least one Zener diode connected in parallel with the load that acts as a shunt regulator. The system may be especially suited for matching the controlled luminance of light emitting diodes to the controlled luminance of incandescent lighting. The systems may also be useful for displays where a single master voltage regulator switch or controller controls the different types of lighting. The systems may be packaged in a chip scale package for compactness, reduced weight, cost effectiveness, and higher efficiency and reliability.”

Sam Truong, Director of Engineering at Staco Systems says, “The capability to adjust the LED pushbutton luminance will make the retrofit process to panels that have incandescent pushbutton as plug-n-play. This dimming circuit offers significant advantages to the aircraft pilot who may wish to manually dim displays by adjusting a dimmer switch. Each of the lights having a similar “brightness” is particularly important when a pilot is wearing night vision goggles.”
