CS005: Lighted Pushbutton Switch Panel for Shipboard EOT Communications
End User System: Engine Order Telegraph Communications
Application: EOT Panel for Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers
Product: Lighted Pushbutton Switching Panel
Opportunity
Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is upgrading the EOT communications (bridge-to-engine room communication of engine speed) and control systems from analog to digital as part of the Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH) of the Nimitz Class Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carriers. NAVSEA planned to design new operator panels (EOT Panels) for the bridge and engine rooms using the Navy-approved Staco Series 50 lighted pushbutton switches. During discussions on the S50 switches, Staco offered to design and manufacture the complete panel assembly, allowing the NAVSEA engineers to focus their attention on the complex digital control and communications systems. NAVSEA asked Staco to submit a proposal, and to pay particular attention to designing a panel that would pass the onerous MIL-S-901D shock testing required for shipboard equipment.
Execution
Staco proposed two panel solutions: One using the S50 switches and an alternate using the new Series 200 ultra compact switches. Not only has the S200 already passed 901D shock testing by Staco, its small size reduced the enclosure depth from 4" (using the S50) to 1.5", thus saving precious space behind the panel.
Staco has been contracted to supply 1 x S50 panel and 1 x S200 panel. NAVSEA will subject both panels to 901D shock testing and select one to move forward with on the program.
Staco will be performing computer-simulated shock testing on the panel designs prior to manufacture in order to identify any required design modifications.
